Lachenpa, who joined Mumbai City FC in 2020 after being named the Best Goalkeeper of the I-League 2019 while playing for Real Kashmir, expressed his gratitude towards the club for their support and belief in him.

“I am thankful for the backing, encouragement, and freedom to express myself given to me by this club. I am committed to working hard for the staff, management, and fans, and I aim to repay the trust that Des Buckingham has placed in me,” said Lachenpa in a statement released by the club.

Head coach Des Buckingham praised Lachenpa’s breakout season and highlighted his talent and dedication.

“Phurba had an impressive breakout season after patiently waiting for his opportunity.

Lachenpa delivered a standout performance in the Indian Super League semi-final of the 2020-21 season when he entered the penalty shootout against FC Goa, helping Mumbai City FC secure a spot in their first-ever final in the competition.

He featured in five out of six matches for Mumbai City FC in the AFC Champions League and became a regular starter for the club in the ISL. Lachenpa even received the Man-of-the-Match award on one occasion during the club’s Champions League campaign.

Hailing from Sikkim, Lachenpa started his career with the youth team of Shillong Lajong. In the ISL, he has made 22 appearances, recording 64 saves, conceding 23 goals, and keeping seven clean sheets, ranking him third among the competition’s goalkeepers with the most clean sheets.

Lachenpa’s remarkable performances earned him his first call-up to the Indian national team for the Tri-Nation Tournament in March this year.
