Complaint filed against Suvendu Adhikari over remarks on tribal TMC leaders

On Tuesday, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) filed a written complaint against BJP MLA and Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari at the Singur police station, alleging that he made derogatory remarks against TMC state minister Birbaha Hansda and MLA Debnath Hansda. The TMC asserted that Adhikari’s comments were “anti-tribal and derogatory.” Local TMC workers Prakash Kisku and Ramesh Mandi lodged the complaint and staged a protest outside the Hooghly district police station, urging action against Adhikari.

Expressing their displeasure, Mandi stated, “The kind of comments Adhikari made is unfortunate and uncalled for. Action must be taken against him for making anti-tribal comments.” A purported video released by the TMC on Monday captured Adhikari allegedly making remarks against Birbaha Hansda, who is a state minister from the Scheduled Tribe (ST) community. However, Adhikari denied making such comments and declined to comment further on the matter.

This incident follows closely on the heels of state minister Akhil Giri’s controversial remarks about President Droupadi Murmu, prompting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to issue an apology. The BJP had demanded Giri’s removal as a state minister and called for action against him. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has also been filed in the Calcutta High Court seeking action against Giri.

Responding to the TMC’s complaint against Adhikari, BJP leader Sanjay Pande accused the TMC of attempting to divert attention from the derogatory comments made by their leader against the President. Pande argued that the TMC’s actions were aimed at thwarting the widespread protest against the state minister’s remarks.
